Conquer your music festival period fears
Ah music festivals. The great outdoors. Free spirits. Free love. And the ultimate escape from the daily grind. With so much goodwill in the air, you don’t want to have to think about the less savory aspects. Like the toilets. Or, worse still, having to deal with your period in “those” toilets.
Help is at hand
Whether you’re at Coachella or Glastonbury, Fuji Rock or Benicassim there’s one thing that follows you everywhere. That smell. Not just the weed. That unmistakable stench of the Porta Pottie. The warmer the weather, the worse it gets.
So wouldn’t it be amazing if you could avoid having to visit them every 4 hours to change your pad or tampon? If you could dance like no one’s watching without constantly checking yourself for leaks? Or if you could jump into a lake for a spot of wild swimming without that tell-tale string tail hanging out of your pussy?
It’s as though period cups were invented for music festivals. You can feel safe and your vagina can feel naturally moist for up to 12 hours. You’ll forget you’re even on your period. Pads and tampons, on the other hand, can leave you dry and uncomfortable in hot weather and could land you with a nasty yeast infection.
While you’re getting to know your menstrual cup, or if you’re having a heavy flow, you may want to check it every few hours. Check out our article on ‘How often do I need to empty my menstrual cup?’ for more information.
Of course your bladder and bowels won’t give you 12 hours off, but you can be in and out of the toilet, without any fuss or fiddling around in a matter of minutes.
When it does come to how to clean your menstrual cup in a public toilet, just make sure you wash your hands before and after and use fresh water or wipes to give it a rinse.
Chuck in a long journey, by plane or car, or the unpredictability of an irregular menstrual cycle (yes, you can use a period cup even when you’re not on your period), and you’ll soon understand why period cups are as much of a festival favorite as the Shewee.
